History of Native American Lacrosse
Can you imagine lacrosse was being played, when only Native Americans and wild-life lived in our current home. It was. There were many different versions played by different Native American tribes two of them were the Cherokees’ version and the six Tribes of the Iroquois’ version. If you already knew that did you ever think of why, and how they played? Well, if not I’m here to tell you.
Do you believe that lacrosse was possibly played in the 1100s in Mesoamerica (the middle of America) or Mexico? Native Americans of the United States and Canada where the first to play the game. They often played to settle any disagreements or conflicts between villages. It was played to prepare young men for war. Lastly, it was played because of ritual and religion.
The Cherokees’ version of “Little brother of war” as they called it could be played with up to 100-1,000 men, on a field 500 meters to many miles long. Because of the many people playing, players without the ball would often try to hurt and injure members of the opposing team. Unlike the Six Tribes of the Iroquois’ version called “baggataway” or “tewaraathon”, there were only 12 to 15 people played on each team and the goal was only 120 feet apart.
Both versions of the game used large rocks or trees as goals. The rules were often decided the night before the game. Normally, the only rule was that you could not touch the ball with your hands. The ball was made out of wood, deerskin, baked clay, or rock. Their range of equipment was slim, nothing more than big wooden sticks in the shape of large spoons, without netting or mesh. They wore nothing to protect their bodies.
So, as you can see, lacrosse was a lot different when the Native Americans played, from how we play today. There has been great development since the 1100s.
Pointillisim
You may not be the greatest artist in the world, or even know how to draw a tree, but if you can make dots, you can do pointillism. Pointillism is a type of art made of nothing but thousands and thousands of dots, big dots, small dots, blue dots, green dots, what ever kind of dots you like.
One of the most famous pointillism artist is Georges Seurat
He is most famous for his painting is called the Sunday Afternoon on La Grande Jatte, there is even a play based on this paintings.
Although pointillism is created out of dots and dots are easy to make it takes a lot of patience and a good color eye. If you look closely at the pictures above all the colors are made up of more then one single color, for example look closely at the green can you see other colors other then just maybe some yellows and blues and some times even purples.
To start your piece of pointillism art draw a light pencil outline of what you want your picture to be of, I suggest for your first drawing to make it small so it doesn’t take as long. Start to think what colors you should use, collect your materials (markers, or colored pencils, or crayons, or paint) in the colors you need. Next start DOTING ! Try not to leave any white spaces. Remember you can use more then on color to make a single color. When your making orange for example DON’T use contrasting colors USE complementary colors, a contrasting color would be blue, complementary colors would be yellow, and red.
Colors across from each other are contrasting and the colors next to each other are complimentary. Okay you should know be set to continue doting, and don’t forget to have FUN
Drawing a Still Life
Personally, I love to draw still lives. There simple and fun. A cool way to set up a still life is to build a box about 24 inches long, 16 inches high, and 13 inches wide (this is just a suggestion, you can make your box any size you want) out of any material available to you, then line it with white paper. This will make a good place to put any object your heart desires to draw, possibly some pretty shells
or maybe some fruit, or even your favorite stuffed animal
. Try experimenting with the lighting, using different amounts of it in different places, to change the shadow of your composition (if you don’t know what a composition is, don’t worry I will inform you, a composition is a arrangement of objects your drawing, or just what your drawing). Next, experiment with the arrangement of your object or objects, draw a few thumbnails (thumbnails are small quick sketches of your composition) to get a idea of what each arrangement would look like. Then pick one and start drawing. Notice every nook and cranny. When your drawing remember to start with your lights, then middles, and finally dark. Take your time and have fun (:
My Blog
Art can be anything from drawing and panting to music and dancing, but my blog happens to be about the drawing, and painting type of art, and maybe some arts and crafts here and there.
Artist Eye
When it comes to art, anyone can be good at it, you may find that hard to believe but the truth is you can do just about anything you think you can.
Part of being a artist, is looking at all your surroundings with a artist eye. Try looking at every little detail and every line, if you look closely everything you see is made up of lines. Strait lines, curvy lines, zig-zag lines, round lines, etc.
You also want to pay attention to negative and positive spaces ( these terms may seem like math, but don’t worry there not). To understand what negative and positive spaces are imagine a tree, the branches are the positive space, the space between the branches is the negative space.
There are many things you need to notice using an artist eye, what I just told you are only two of those things. You’ll probably read more about seeing with a artist eye on my blog in the future, because it has a lot to do with being a artist. If you’re still a little confused abut any of what I just told you, feel free to ask me about it.
